Jack noticed that his mother had taken down the mirror in the front hallway. "I was careless and smashed it cleaning," she explained when he gave her a look.
But everything else was exactly the way he remembered it. The front closet still smelled of lavender soap. And somehow, miraculously, there was a cake baking in the oven, just like when he used to come home on school holidays. His mother must have been saving up her ration cards for ages. She made him an omelet for his tea, too, and while they were eating she wanted to hear all about his time at East Grinstead.
He didn't tell her about his 60 surgeries. Instead, he talked about Dr. McIndoe and how he let them wear their uniforms and keep beer under their beds.
And then he told her to put back the mirror.
